Description

WWC Scaffolding and Release System

The Scaffolding Playbook + The Release Protocol

Help students move from supported reading to independent comprehension with a complete system for choosing, monitoring, reducing, and removing instructional scaffolds.

The WWC Scaffolding and Release System combines two connected teacher resources:

Part 1: The WWC Scaffolding Playbook
How to Scaffold Each Comprehension Gap Type

Part 2: The WWC Release Protocol
When to Stop Scaffolding and How to Do It

Together, these resources help teachers answer two of the most important questions in comprehension instruction:

What support does this student actually need?
How will I know when that support should be reduced or removed?

Many scaffolding resources explain how to add support. Far fewer explain how to prevent that support from becoming permanent. This system is built around one central principle:

Every scaffold should have a removal plan from the moment it is introduced.

When a scaffold remains in place too long, it can stop functioning as a bridge and become part of the student’s permanent reading process. Students may begin to wait for an introduction, an explanation, a graphic organizer, a sentence frame, or teacher confirmation before they begin thinking independently.

The WWC Scaffolding and Release System helps teachers avoid that pattern by connecting each scaffold to a specific comprehension gap and pairing it with a clear release process.

Inside the Bundle

Part 1: The WWC Scaffolding Playbook

Teachers learn how to identify and respond to the five comprehension gap types within the Independent Comprehension Design framework.

For each gap type, the playbook explains:

  • What the gap may look like in the classroom
  • What the student may be experiencing while reading
  • The specific scaffolding move to use
  • How to introduce the scaffold
  • What the student should do while the scaffold is in place
  • What teachers should observe
  • Signs that the scaffold is helping
  • Risks of leaving the scaffold in place without a removal plan

Part 2: The WWC Release Protocol

Teachers learn how to make evidence-based decisions about what should happen next.

The protocol helps educators determine whether to:

  • Keep the current scaffold
  • Reduce one part of the support
  • Remove the scaffold
  • Restore a targeted support temporarily
  • Reassess whether the difficulty comes from the passage, the task, or the skill

Teachers are guided to look for evidence such as:

  • Whether the student begins without waiting for help
  • Whether the student can explain the strategy
  • Whether the skill transfers to an unfamiliar passage
  • Whether performance remains stable after support is reduced
  • Whether the student can organize thinking without a familiar template
  • Whether the scaffold is still supporting growth or beginning to maintain dependence

The Complete WWC Process

Identify the gap → Select the scaffold → Monitor performance → Reduce support → Verify transfer → Build independence

This bundle is designed for ELA teachers, reading interventionists, special education teachers, instructional coaches, tutors, MTSS and RTI teams, and educators supporting students who struggle with independent comprehension.

The goal is not to remove support quickly. The goal is to provide the right support, monitor what changes, and remove it at the right time.

Scaffolding should help students become independent readers—not become the way they read.
